Shailene Woodley: ‘My boobs shrank. No one tells you that when you lose weight’

Shailene Woodley

Shailene Woodley covers the June issue of InStyle to promote The Fault in Our Stars. The woman on the cover looks beautiful, but it doesn’t looks like Shailene (who is also beautiful). There’s so much needless photoshop going on here. It’s as if they morphed her face with Natasha McElhone. There’s no excuse for airbrushing anyone into oblivion, let alone a 22-year-old.

The Dolce & Gabbana dress on the cover is gorgeous. The rest of the shoot is jungle-inspired with lush patterns and background decor, but the airbrushing continues. Shailene looks almost corpselike in some of the photos. That’s strange because she’s so animated in interviews and on camera, and the shoot leaves me cold. This interview is a little different from the usual nature-child stuff we expect from Shailene. Thank goodness she’s not talking about feminism again:

She lost weight for the role: “I look at pictures of me with long hair and I think, ‘Who is that person?’ Even my voice and the way I hold myself has changed. I’m in a place where I feel healthier than I’ve ever been, and my body is exactly where it wants to be. I feel like I’m a woman. My boobs shrank. No one tells you that when you lose weight. No bra, no problem!”

She doesn’t care what you think: “I’m done living for other people. I’m done being a people pleaser. I’m done thinking about what other people think about me.”

A bit of navel gazing: “The second you get out of your head and into your heart, you can be present for other people.

On playing a cancer patient: “It changed my whole life and put things in perspective. I realized I was good at being outwardly positive because that’s how I am by nature. But internally? I was so mean to myself. Realizing I needed to make a shift was a big moment for me. ‘F— you, insecurity. F— you, lack of confidence!’ When I finally realized I have to live life for myself and not for anyone else is when I started being more generous and kind and grateful, I was able to give back more.”

On her real-life scoliosis: “My friends and I named my brace Casey. I took it off to eat, to go on dates, and to shower. It was uncomfortable, but I thought, ‘I can complain, or I can embrace it, literally, and move on.'”

I didn’t even notice that Shailene had lost weight for this role. She’s always been slender, but it makes sense that she’d drop a few pounds to play a cancer patient. She’s really excited about going without a bra, and I don’t blame her. She’s lucky her skin bounced right back so she can go do that. A lot of women experience shrinking boobs when they lose weight. The problem is that that breast skin usually isn’t as elastic as the rest of the body, so a shrinking rack can appear deflated instead of perky. Shailene is one of the fortunate ones. Must be all that mountain spring water working in her favor. Ha.

I’ve included some photos of Shailene & Ansel Elgort at a Berlin fan event last week. This InStyle shoot hurts my eyes.
