CB covered Selena Gomez’s horrendous look at the Met Gala, so I ended up not paying that much attention to Selena. Now that I’m looking at these photos though… my God!! I don’t really consider Selena to be a fashionista, honestly, so I already have a low bar set for her red carpet looks. But surely she can hire some good people to style her? Because I think the people she’s got around her might not have her best interests at heart. It’s one thing to wear a shapeless, negligee-looking gown because you’ve got a $10 million Coach contract. It’s another thing to style that horrid dress with bad hair and an aggressive fake tan.
Anyway, Selena was obviously on a lot of “Worst Dressed at the Met Gala” lists. She knows. She understands that it wasn’t a good look. So she posted this to Instagram:
Which is cute and fine, but then of course Selena had to underline the point. It’s basically the Taylor Swift School of Self-Referencing And Overexplaining. You can’t just make a self-aware joke on social media – you have to get your people to over-explain it to People Magazine:
After Selena Gomez posted a cryptic Instagram video showing herself running away from her Met Gala photos, many began to speculate she wasn’t happy with her appearance on Monday’s red carpet. But an insider tells PEOPLE that the 25-year-old singer shared the clip as a message to her internet haters.
“In person, she honestly felt great but not everything looks the same as it does in person,” the source says. “She was just clapping back at people who were commenting on her tan and hair and wanted to make a joke about it.”
Twitter was quick to notice Gomez’s enhanced glow and users didn’t hold back from sharing their unfiltered thoughts about her overly bronzed appearance. “Whoever gave selena gomez that spray tan tonight is holding a secret grudge against her,” one user wrote, with another writing, “Why is Selena Gomez looking like Ross when he got a spray tan? #MetGala.”
The insider tells PEOPLE that, Gomez “got it when she saw the photos.”
As for her custom Coach dress, Gomez “loved” the design and how it honored the theme.
“She had two outfits to choose from and decided on Sunday which one she was going to go with,” the source shares. “She loved the dress and was very involved with it.”
So now instead of coming across like a person who can laugh at herself, Selena seems hypersensitive and like she can’t actually take a joke. As for this idea that she looked great in person and her look only photographed poorly… I’m including a shot of Selena outside of her hotel, a candid photo in regular lighting, as she was heading to the gala: if anything, her fake tan and makeup looked even worse than it did in the more complimentary light of the gala carpet. I have a hard time believing that Selena looked amazing in person.
