Nikki Reed hooked up with Derek Hough after her marriage went south: believable?

This is one of those celebrity-planted stories in US Weekly, so we can say with some degree of certainty that the celebrities and their publicists want us to believe this. I have my doubts as to whether DWTS pro Derek Hough is straight, but maybe that’s just because he’s so damn pretty and lithe. Plus he comes from a very strict Mormon upbringing, so that may have something to do with it.

Hough has been linked with his DWTS partner Shannon Elizabeth (a romance which they admitted was faked for publicity), with Cheryl Cole, and with Nina Dobrev right after her split with Ian Somerhalder. So now he has another lady on the rebound, a newly single Nikki Reed, who just broke up with her husband of two years, Paul McDonald. Nikki and Derek are allegedly having a spring romance, and were seen engaging in PDA at a bar:

Reed, 25, and Hough, 28, were most recently spotted making out at Rock & Reilly’s in L.A. on April 18, an onlooker tells Us. The duo were joined by Hough’s DWTS best friend Mark Ballas and costar Cheryl Burke.
“The whole group was drinking and partying. Derek bought shots for Nikki at the bar,” the eyewitness tells Us. “There was lots of PDA, Nikki was feeding him, holding hands, and they left together.” The onlooker adds: “They didn’t seem to care if anyone was watching.”
Reed, for her part, has also been taking time out to support Hough on DWTS. A source tells Us the Email star was hanging out with Ballas’ girlfriend BC Jean backstage during this week’s April 29 episode. (The American Idol stage is right next to the ABC dancing competition.) “She’s such a sweet girl! Really down to earth,” a source tells Us of Reed. “They are having fun hanging out. It’s a good match.”
The Scout actress is close to Hough’s sister Julianne, which doesn’t make the new pairing far-fetched. As Us exclusively reported, the blue-eyed dancer briefly wooed Julianne’s close friend, Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev, back in September 2013 for six weeks. (The siblings will star in MOVE, a dance tour, this summer.)
Us confirmed back in March that Reed and American Idol alum McDonald, 29, decided to pull the plug on their marriage. The pair first met while the singer was a a contestant on Season 10 of the FOX series, and tied the knot in October 2011.
They lived separately for six months before announcing their split, but still plan on working together on their debut album, I’m Not Falling.
The twosome may be having fun, but a second insider close to the actress says it isn’t serious. “Nikki isn’t currently dating anyone. She is focused on her divorce from Paul and caring for that relationship as well as her latest film projects,” the source says. “Nikki and Julianne are good friends, and she has hung out with Derek a few times through her. They’re having fun but it’s nothing serious.”

Is “nothing serious” code for “breakup announcement scheduled in 6 weeks” or does it mean that Nikki and/or Derek are just trying to play it cool? Derek does look like Nikki’s type, I have to admit. Her husband was a smallish pretty blonde guy, just like Derek. Derek has dated only brunettes, so Nikki is his type too. It may be on! Then again, Derek’s dance movie, Make Your Move, just came out on DVD. I keep seeing ads for it.
