Last month Halle Berry took her ex, Gabriel Aubry, to court over her claims that he had chemically straightened and lightened their six year-old daughter Nahla’s hair. Berry did this after petitioning, (unsuccessfully as far as we’ve heard) to have her child support to Aubry reduced from $16,000 a month to $3,800 a month. In court documents obtained by The Daily Mail, Berry claimed that the changes in her daughter’s hair could not be attributed to sun or chlorine damage. Berry also wrote that she sent a sample of Nahla’s hair to a lab for testing and that is confirmed her suspicions. If Berry submitted a copy of the lab report to the court it was not reported, however. She also claimed that Aubry repeatedly denied chemically straightening or dyeing their daughter’s hair. She wrote:
I have since reviewed the laboratory report concerning this very hair sample that I obtained, which confirms to me that Gabriel has not been truthful about what he has done and had been doing to our daughter’s hair.
I continue to worry about the potential psychological and physical damage to Nahla that can be caused by the use of chemical hair treatments and the psychological message that it conveys to Nahla, and to implore the court to put a stop to Gabriel’s attempts to alter our daughter’s appearance and most probably cause her to wonder why her natural appearance is not good enough.
As a result of Halle’s claim, the judge ruled that neither Aubry nor Berry could alter their daughter’s natural hair.
I thought this was just a case of former partners arguing over how to care for a little girl’s hair, although some readers had strong feelings about chemical hair treatments for children and their impact on racial identity. All of that may be moot, however, if Aubry wasn’t actually doing any of the things that Halle accused him of in court.
A new brief TMZ article features cute photos of Gabriel doting on Nahla and toying with her hair. They look so happy and comfortable together and you can tell that Gabriel adores his daughter. TMZ also has a few lines attributed to a source. This kind of sums it up for me:
We’ve learned Gabriel NEVER used chemicals on Nahla’s hair. It was all courtesy of a blow dryer. What’s more, we’re told Gabriel thinks Halle is being ridiculous and is just trying to keep the custody war going over nothing
That’s what many people were saying all along, and I tend to believe it.
I have to add that in the photo set on TMZ, Gabriel and Nahla are being photographed by a young brunette woman wearing an engagement ring. I was going to speculate that she could be Gabriel’s fiance but I checked out other photos of her out with Gabriel and Nahla and she looks more like a nanny type.
