Daniel Radcliffe will make Broadway debut nude in Equus in September

Harry Potter is coming to Broadway… nude. Okay I realize Daniel Radcliffe isn’t actually Harry Potter… but he so is. I can’t really look at him without seeing a boy wizard who needs his glasses and a scarf. Daniel is reprising his role in “Equus,” a play about a psychiatrist who tries to treat a young man (Radcliffe’s character) who has a religious and sexual fascination with horses. The psychiatrist is being played by Richard Griffiths, who played Harry’s cruel Uncle Vernon in the Harry Potter films.

Harry Potter is headed to The Great White Way. Daniel Radcliffe, the star of the “Harry Potter” movies, will make his Broadway debut on Sept. 5, playing the disturbed stable boy in a revival of Peter Shaffer’s play, “Equus,” it was announced Tuesday.

Radcliffe, 18, earned rave reviews for his performance in the London production of the Tony Award-winning play. He also received loads of media attention for appearing naked onstage – a departure from his wholesome image as the bespectacled boy wizard in the big-screen adaptations of J.K. Rowling’s best-selling fantasy novels.

“Equus” begins previews Sept. 5 for a limited 22-week run at the Broadhurst Theatre. The play opens Sept. 25-Feb. 8, 2009. Thea Sharrock directs.

Supposedly the play is amazing. It sounds a bit odd, but that’s generally a good foundation for a spectacular play. There’s something about the thought of seeing Harry Potter totally naked that seems so wrong to me. There was much talk about Daniel’s nudity the first time around during the play’s London showing, and I imagine the same will happen in New York.
