I know I’m going to catch hell for this, but for my money, Carole Middleton is a much better dresser than either of her daughters. Carole manages to look occasion-appropriate and age-appropriate almost always. If I had to complain about anything, it’s that she sometimes veers into looks that are “too young” but even then… she’s a pretty spry, youthful 60 year old, so she pulls it off most of the time. While Duchess Kate wore a conservative red dress to Wimbledon yesterday, Carole came out in this utterly adorable, summery shirtdress. THIS is what Kate should have worn. It’s lovely.
Ever since then-Kate Middleton married Prince William, there’s been speculation as to whether the Middletons – Carole and Michael – will be given some kind of title. Because it’s seen as unseemly in some circles that the mother of a future queen and grandmother of a future king would be an un-titled commoner. Well, now Daily Mail gossip guy Ephrain Hardcastle (my DM gossip name would be Kaisleigh Biscuitthrust) claims that Carole and Michael will definitely get a title… when Charles is king.
Whither the status of Michael Middleton, father of future Queen Kate, grandfather of future King George? Royals normally marry each other, or someone from the nobility with titles and a distinguished pedigree, otherwise they improve the rank of incomers. Princess Margaret’s untitled husband, Antony Armstrong-Jones, was ennobled as Earl of Snowdon to give their children titles.
So it is likely that Michael Middleton will be offered an earldom, making his wife Carole a countess, his son, James, a viscount and his daughter, Pippa, a lady. But there’s no rush.
‘Michael’s still getting used to having a coat of arms, so the expectation is that the earldom might be offered as part of a tranche of appointments made when Charles becomes king,’ a source suggests.
Yes, it’s good to wait. It’s also possible that the royals are waiting to see if the Middletons’ marriage survives much longer. I think Carole and Michael did hit a rough patch, but Carole thankfully realized that her place isn’t micromanaging her daughter’s life. Right? Hopefully. Maybe. Who knows?
Incidentally, we learned something new about Prince George and what he calls Carole and Queen Elizabeth. Apparently, George calls Carole “grandma” and he calls the Queen “nanny”. Will and Harry call their grandmother “Granny”. Just FYI.
