Amal Clooney wears Gucci to the United Nations summit: sailor-ish or lovely?

We haven’t discussed Amal Clooney since June!! I’ve sort of missed her, mostly because she is genuinely fun to cover. As I mentioned in that George Clooney story a few days ago, George and Amal spent the entire summer at his home in Como, Italy. Clooney has historically spent most of his summers in Italy, although it does feel like George and Amal were “away” for a lot longer this summer in particular. I also theorized in that Clooney story that the reason that there were so few photos of the Clooneys this summer was because one or both of them was recovering from some “work.” Who knows? I think Amal looks particularly well-rested, but no, I don’t notice any particular work. Maybe George was the one who will look “different.”

These are photos of Amal at the Women in the World reception at the United Nations on Friday. For her first big appearance in months, Amal wore this “mod” Gucci dress. Am I the only one who sees something naval/sailor-ish with this dress? Am I hallucinating sailor looks because of the Duchess of Cambridge? I think it seems naval to me because of the combination of cream and navy and big gold buttons (on the sleeves). It does have that mod flavor that Amal seems to like – the silhouette reminds me of, like, a stewardess’s uniform from the 1960s. Pan-Am, maybe? Unlike Duchess Kate’s parade of beige pumps, Amal actually loves different and sometimes weird shoes. She paired this Gucci dress with Giambattista Valli shoes that have a mirrored chunky heel. I don’t think the shoes really go with the dress, but sure.

Amal attended the conference because she was celebrating the appointment of a new UN goodwill ambassador named Nadia Murad, and the new UN program Nadia’s Initiative. Amal spoke about Nadia’s harrowing journey through being held captive by ISIS and seeing most of her family get slaughtered by ISIS fighters. Murad is Yazidi, and she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for her work in getting people to understand the living hell the Yazidi people have been put through by ISIS. You can read more here. Amal also did a pre-taped interview with the Today Show which will air on Monday.
